Brownbook Magazine Page, April 2020 Issue
This project was for Illustration class. The prompt of the assignment was to create an illustration that is based on or pays homage to a famous illustrator's work. My piece pays homage to Al Parker, who drew in various styles for numerous magazine publications. My illustration is inspired by Parker's drawings for the hair care magazine, Redbook. I drew an African American woman with a red Afro for the fictional magazine, Brownbook. Hair plays a large role in identity, especially in the African American community, so I wanted to highlight that in my piece. Also, natural hairstyles, like the Afro, and bright hair colors are popular among women in the African American community.
